my 7/8 comment was for the tundra. I saw it referred to that way in one of the car mags. I know it's an exaggeration but the tundra interior does feel smaller than C/F/D's. specs show it is shorter (218 vs chevy 228"), narrower, and less tall.<br>
tundra's capacity numbers are there with C/F/D, but I like to stay away from "undersized" machinery even though it carries impressive stats. i drive an Intrepid for work with 2.7L V-6 "rated" at 200hp. those 200 ponies must not have gotten their oats, cause it's a dog.<br>
And I have 4 toyota's in the family now,so i'm not picking a anti-toyota argument.<br>
I just prefer working with a bigger tool. That's why i mentioned hearing of larger versions in the future.<br>

my experience with a landscape rake is that it's primary function is to level and smooth dirt. That's why most posters refer to the weight of the unit, which factors into the rake's ability to level off the ground, since 3ph's don't provide any down-force.
If used on grass to remove leaves, branches, etc, mine digs up the sod.
I have an estate rake (brand name) that is has 6 pinwheel type rakes similar to hayrakes. It windrows the leaves and twigs; anything bigger than small branches tend to bind up the pinwheels. Of course you then have to do something with the windrows -- I take the "time-saver" route -- I mow over the windrows and chop up everything with a rear finish mower. It all dissipates in a couple weeks.

suggest you talk to the seller about the hours on a tractor you're interested in. what kind of hours? a lot of my tractor's hours are not hard work. i tend to let the tractor idle while i dither around hooking up attachments. mowing is high rpm, low load hours.
HST's tend to be run at a constant rpm, while gear models are run with an accelerator -- so what's the effect on a diesel?

Just visited the Kubota website to see what the new Grand L-30 series Ute's looked like. The L5030 has more of almost everything than the JD4710: Hp, weight, instrumentation, wheels diameter, seat adjustments. The hydraulics flow specs are slightly under JD's, but they rate the lift capacity higher.
So, does Mr Deere respond or not? The -10 series modernized the controls, but they really need a -20 series to compete with the ergonomics and design of the NH-Boomer's and now the Kubota's (I'd seriously consider them if only they didn't use the same color as those maniac volunteers from UT).

The rear wheels are all different on the 3 common tire types:
Turf tires use a one-piece wheel.
The R-1's and R-4's use a 2-piece wheel consisting of a center dish and a rim. The center disk is common to both R-1 and R-4, but the R-4 uses a wider rim than the R-1.
So if you really want to switch tire types, you will need the wheels and tires.
I recently checked on cost of the R-4 rims only (no center disk): $160 each. Also looked at some Goodyear radial R-4's with aggressive tread: $430 each. And $50/hour to mount -- that ain't chickenfeed when you have double rear wheel weights to contend with.
The chains would provide decent traction in the woods and less traction inside your wallet.

Ok, i lost my battle with my slopes this year, and my solution is to throw money at it (the tractor).
In several postings early this year, I addressed my difficulty in mowing sidehills with a JD4700+LPFDR2584 finish mower. Frequently found myself sliding sideways down the hill from the weight of the mower. The stock Titan R-4's in my mind aggravated the problem - I felt the treads had too little biting edges and acted like runners. I tried lowering pressure down to 5psi to make them buna babies sit down and grab dirt, and that didn't make a difference.
And anytime I had the tractor in 2wd, i could depend on sliding while going down even mild angles when heading downhill.
So Mr Goodyear is getting his chance: They have an Industrial model that has more teeth segments in the center of the tread, plus they're Radials (squat down, bigger contact spot). Ag specialist at Mr GY believes this is the answer. They're the same width as the standard R-4, so I won't have to return to Ag's which are too aggressive.
Here's what I got to offer: A slightly used set of 17.5x24 R-4's. Still has most nubs and raised edges on the treads; I Armorall the rubber 3-4x yearly.
I can offer the two R-4's by themselves, or alternatively I will sell the tires on their original rims. That way the buyer can simply remove his Ag or Turf tires plus rims, and keep his wheel dishes on the axle. Gives you the option to use either the R-4's or your old tires, by swapping out the rim/tire (I know it ain't easy, but easier than removing the entire wheel).

yes. The estate rake is a pull-behind attachment that works on the same principle as a hay rake. I bought mine thru my JD dealer, but I've seen them at Northern. There are two sizes: the smaller works a swath 4-5'wide, while the larger has a 6-7' path. I described my experiences with them earlier this spring in a posting series concerning what to do with leaves.
Summarizing, I like them very much. They are adjustable for down-pressure on the rake tines. At the light setting, they are able to pick up oak leaves and grass clippings and windrow them. At a heavy setting they do a fairly good job of scratching the ground surface for seeding. But this also is more difficult to control - the unit tends to dog-walk sideways, which reduces the effective width and is hard on the tines (bends them). I traded for the larger unit because I'm working 6 acres and the smaller one took too long. Pulling with a Honda ES Foreman ATV. They're well built, but the company making them need a little upgrading with marketing, literature, operating instructions, all of which are really bad.

I had a 955 and had no trans problems - what did you run into?
I have a 4700HST now, and mow with a LP-FDR-25-84" finish mower. It bogs down on uphill runs. So a 12 ft mower sounds like a lot to power up, unless you're on flat land (what we Wisconsiners refer to Illini as - Flatlanders).

I painted the underside of my 54" deck with the graphite loaded coating (acrylic-based), from Farm&Fleet. It is a surprisingly tough coating -- mowed 3-1/2 hrs and had minimal buildup, so i'm satisfied. Previously i've tried WD40, and silicon spray, with little effect. I think most things applied to deck undersides wear off very quickly with the volume of cuttings moving thru the deck. Twigs, dirt, etc all abrade and carry off most applications.
After a couple more mowings, i'll check how much of the acrylic is worn off. Looks good for now.

Have 15 hrs on my X595 now. Geez, it is a fine machine. It mows, it goes, it is the best at what it is intended for.
The 4wd gets it around on hill's, slopes and slippery grass with no sliding or spinning. The differential lock is almost unnecessary. In fact I forgot the unit was in 2wd for awhile and it went most everywhere i thought would require 4wd. Tackled some heavy mowing on a steep slope, but the engine never lost an rpm -- it's strong.
My installment payments for this toy will go on for some years to come, but i can't imagine ever regretting buying it.

bob: spend the extra $, and you'll never regret it. I've had 4 compact JD's. Each time i got the std bucket and the dealer didn't mention the hd option. So then i went out and bent up the bucket on 3 of them.
If you don't tackle projects more demanding than dirt or gravel or shredded bark, the std bucket is okay. But if you're a normal red-blooded american tractor guy, you'll eventually want to push out a stump, or dig out a frigidaire-sized rock. And you'll bend the lower bucket lip, the top lip, and/or the sides. And then wish to hell you'd gotten the hd.
BUT (caps for emphasis) get the JD green hd bucket, not some 3rd party / generic thing that the dealer is BS'ing as the real thing. JD's HD is the same bucket as the std bucket, except it has double steel top and side plates welded in, and a much thicker plate for the bottom edge.

i bought the adjustable links for the 3ph lower arms after a year. don't recall the exact pricing but they cost me around $250 -- if i had gotten them as an option when i bought the 4700, the cost would have been around $175.
Either way the $$$ is high, but once you have them, they make life a lot easier: 90% less work hooking up (getting off and on the tractor to nudge it up to the impl, and wrenching my back pulling the impl's into position.

As in most situations, circumstance makes a difference.
I've found that when a tractor on a side hill reaches the point where the center of gravity causes a tractor to start to tip, if the operator turns uphill, he will turn it over.
If he is sliding, and the tractor's uphill wheels haven't lifted off the ground, he may be able to regain traction by powering uphill.
If other CTB readers find it interesting that there's any uncertainty in what action to avoid trouble, then i suggest they take all of the posted thoughts with serious reservation, and live to tell about it -- if they're working on sidehills, and they're carefull they'll find out soon enough how to react and be around to contribute here.

tree farmer -- i have your problem too. my 4700 didn't have the problem last year. but i believe it started this summer after extended use in hot weather. it appears to be something that evaporates off something in/behind the instrument panel, then condenses on the back of the clear lenscover. i have places where it literally forms rivulets that run down to the bottom. it is a milky or cloudy condensate. when i check the tractor cold, the panel is clear again. the condensation appears in slightly different areas time-to-time.
I don't like the idea of something degrading by losing some form of chemical agent or additive.

I mow on hills with R4's and the 4wd is the only way to keep the tractor from sliding on even a mild slope. If you want to keep from digging up the ground during slides, you simply keep in 4wd. On steeper slopes in 2wd, there isn't much you can do in a slide except ride it all the way down.

I just spent the day on my X595. It does its thing better than any machine i've had previously. And you know, it doesn't bother me a bit that JD won't put a backhoe on it.
Regards your Q on deck width, the 54" extends approx 6" beyond the left wheels and 2-3" beyond the right wheels. I mowed around 125 walnut saplings without a problem. I chose the 54" because I have some tight places to mow, plus the terrain isn't flat -- a wider deck will have trouble giving an even cut on rolling ground.
One downer -- my dealer gave me the prices on some of JD's implements and add-on's for the X4--'s and X5--'s. Wow.

Several mfgrs offer flails that can be offset by 9-12" inches, to allow for mowing under overhangs, etc. Might be something that suits your needs.

There have been many discussions of mowing/cutting regards which size/type is the best. I'm not really sure why but many future users tend to want advice that points them to rotary cutters of some type/mfgr/size. I think rotaries have limited application -- their utility as rough, knock-down implements isn't suited to maintainence of grassy acreage. Any property that will be cut regularly (intervals < 3-4 weeks)can be worked fine with what's called finish mowers. The rotaries are handy knocking down saplings and surviving encounters with rocks, etc., but if the fields are reasonably civilized, then you really don't want to just knock down the vegetation, you want to cut it. That takes a mower. And many mfgrs (Rhino, Woods, LandPride, etc) offer mowers of sufficient heft and strength to cut down most any non-woody non-stony stuff.
Get a neighbor to knock down the rough stuff with a rotary, then buy a mower to keep it looking good.
